You remember how fun Christmas was when you were a kid? But now it's all filled with horrible lines at the mall, rushing to the airport, hanging out with in-laws and/or shuffling around the kids, over-eating and gasping when you get the credit card? I dread December every year.
Well, move over, Christmas, there's a new most wonderful time of the year, and it smells like sausage! Wurstfest starts TOMORROW!!!
Wurstfest, "A ten day Salute To Sausage celebration in New Braunfels, Texas" (from their website), is by far, hands-down, the most fun my husband and I have all year. We've gone every single year that we've lived in Texas (which is 6), and this year is the 50th Anniversary.
Let's just put this out there: Wurstfest is kinda cheesy. People dress up in ridiculous German outfits, wear stupid hats, eat lots of fried food and, most importantly, drink lots of beer. Meanwhile they have like 5 stages going, each with a German oompah band playing “The Chicken Dance.”
But cheesy is how I roll. SXSW? Pfftttt. ACL? Yawn. “Harry Potwurst and the Order of the Opas”? I’m there!
My husband and I truly look forward to this event throughout the year. We usually alternate being designated driver each year, but this year we’ve decided to get a hotel room so that we can both celebrate the 50th Anniversary in style.
To get you prepared, here are the lyrics to one of the greatest beer songs in the world. My favorite version is sung by The Andrews Sisters.
Beer Barrel Polka
There's a garden, what a garden,
Only happy faces bloom there,
And there's never any room there,
For a worry or a gloom there
Oh there's music and there's dancing,
And a lot of sweet romancing
When they play the polka
They all get in the swing
Every time they hear that oom-pa-pa,
Everybody feels so tra-la-la
They want to throw their cares away,
They all go lah-de-ah-de-ay
Then they hear a rumble on the floor, the floor,
It's the big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples form a ring,
For miles around you'll hear them sing...
Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel, we've got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararrel, ring out a song of good cheer
Now's the time to roll the barrel, for the gang's all here
