Yet another unemployment rate post... Austin's December 2010 rate was at 6.8%, compared to the state's rate of 8.0% and the country's 9.1%.
A lot of you guys out there email me about the architecture job market in Austin (I guess you've read some old posts of mine!). My husband, of course, is an architect and I do have a pretty good opinion on what the market looks like out there.
I heard somewhere that the entire field of architecture has something like a 40% unemployment rate, so I'm thinking that it blows everywhere. Although, I have also heard that other Texas cities are doing better, like Dallas and Houston. My husband was laid off in April 2009 and has been working on his own projects since then, but last October he decided to expand his knowledge base and study up on interaction design. I'm tremendously happy to report that he started his first job/internship this week at a great interaction design company in town and is having a blast. He still wants to keep his architecture license just in case, but I think he's liking this new direction. Apparently a bunch of his new coworkers also have a traditional architecture background, so he doesn't feel quite so out of place. Yes Virginia, there is life after architecture!
I would just like to add here that lately I've been getting a lot more comments and feedback from you guys, and you sure have a lot of nice things to say. It always brightens my day to get your notes.
To say thanks, I would like to offer up this awesome YouTube video. (By the way, it pays to have a best friend who works at YouTube because you get clued in to all the best stuff. Thanks Laura!). If you are into cute baby videos, you'll want to watch it.
